How to help your child memorize short surahs
· 4 min read
Most children can memorize far more than we expect — what they struggle with is keeping it. The difference between a child who knows ten surahs and one who has forgotten them is almost never talent. It is revision.
Start with listening, not reciting
Before your child tries to memorize a surah, let them hear it many times. Play the same reciter in the car, at breakfast, while they tidy their room. By the time they sit down to memorize, half the work is already done.
Fix the reading first
A mistake memorized is a mistake that takes months to undo. Have the teacher read the verse, let your child repeat it correctly three times, and only then start memorizing. This is why we correct recitation before memorization in every Hifz lesson.
A routine that holds
- New: one or two lines a day, no more at the start.
- Recent: recite everything from the last seven days.
- Old: one previously memorized surah, rotated through the week.
- Same time every day — after Fajr or after Maghrib works well.
Keep it warm, not heavy
Praise effort rather than speed. Let your child recite a surah to a grandparent on the phone. Mark the completion of each surah in some small way. A child who associates memorization with warmth will keep going long after the novelty wears off.
